trouble with boeing 878 dreamliner just hours away from touching down in san jose's mineta international airport. overnight cracks appeared in the cockpit windshield of a 787 flying in japan. that plane landed safely. the newest issue comes as faa just announced comprehensive review of the plane dubbed the most technically advanced yet. today's order mandates a second look at the design, manufacture and assembly of the dreamliner. as we mentioned, this is a big deal for the silicon valley because it will land a 787 at sjc this morning. it marks the start of the airline's direct flights to tokyo and beyond. now we asked ana about the recent issues with the plane but they referred us to boeing as for the new nonstop service from mineta and its impact on the silicon valley, business and tech reporter scott mcgrew will have details on that part of the story later this morning. >>> 4:34 right now. a south bay family says investigators are not doing enough to find the person that killed their son three weeks ago and left his body on the side of the road. 24-year-old jacksen madse

considering in just two days from now the boeing 787 made its debut flight from sjc. it will do so with a sold out fight. sold out means 158 passengers will board the dream liner at sjc bound for narita airport. in light of the problems the high tech dream liner has been working through. the aircraft debuted with all nipon airways in october of 2011. since then it's recorded five incidents that each made headlines. problems ranging from electrical concerns in december to just yesterday when one of the 787s began leaking fuel on the ground at boston's logan airport. an aviation expert on the "today" show. you will hear from him in a moment. first we got feedback from passengers who said they were concerned by the news. >> they should test it better before they get people on it. >> i don't want to be on it until they get it fixed. >> i have confidence in the airplane. there are going to be teething problems with a new airplane. it's common. the first commercial aircraft made of light weight carbon composite. 21% less fuel than planes of similar size. waiting to hear back to see if th

come. and it will weaken d.o.d.'s negotiating position. the boeing refueling tanker, first of all, should mention we're still under a continuing resolution so that program like many other programs where funding was supposed to be ramped up it is stuck at last year's levels it is $1 billion short. if you add sequestration on top of that and you appropriate a higher level you're still left short. s we had a contract we signed with boeing and the rate we were going to buy those tankers and now you're cutting the funding and we can't keep up our end of the contract so d.o.d. has to renegotiate with boeing. it is reported that boeing bid they bid very competitively to get that contract. do you think we're in a good position to maintain such a competitive price or is boeing going to walk out in a better position perhaps not losing money on the contract anymore. there are some areas that it is going to be bad for d.o.d. if they have to receiver -- sequester these accounts. >> so the short term is on them. probably be a severe cut back in training and that sort of thing? >> some of the op
